Shakespeare & Co
Paris, France
April, 2001
April in Paris. Its been raining since I got here, but even with rain this is a very beautiful city. I'm staying at Shakespeare & Co, a bookstore run by an excentric 90 year old american. George Whitman has run the store since the 50's and all fameous poets and writers in Paris have frequented the store. Henry Miller lived there. Hemingway was also a frequent visitor in the 20's (before George owned the store). Its free to stay at the bookstore for a few hours of work a day. I love working with George. No matter what I'm doing its never exactly right and he yells at me, but that is his personality and I enjoy it. The bookstore is right across the street from Notre Dame and every moring we have breakfast looking at the towers. Thanks to Chris Gilmore for hooking me up with Shakesphere and introducing me to the most special George Whitman.
