Boat Fun
Morocco
March, 2001
Its been a real trip
lately here. We finally got our boat finnished and
the Gendarmes let us put it in the water. We have had
crazy weather with 10 foot waves breaking right
outside the harbor walls. Yesterday it was a little
calmer so we took the boat for its second ever sail
(the first sail was a few years back, someone went
overboard, they couldnt make it back to port and
luckily got towed in by a fishing boat escaping
possible loss at sea) - we now have an engine so we
can motor out and make it back no matter what. Our
sail went excellent - but it was true that danger
lurked all around us - the giant swell right out the
harbor - not being able to make a tack near the beach
where shore break would do us in - the crazy swirling
tide near the isle de Mogodor etc. But we braved it
and all was well - until today.... I guess there were
signal flags up that stated that no one was to leave
the harbor - we wondered why all 200 fishing boats of
Esaouira were in port but we didnt know about any
signals - what are those giant black triangles
anyway??. This morn the police say we have to get the
boat out of the water unitll our paper work comes back
from Casablanca - which could be today, or 10 years
from now. Our captian (Christopher Gilmore) went and
talked to the police about our ignorance (boating in
America is always at your own risk) and he says we can
keep the boat in until Tuesday but we cant go out.
This whole country is one big haggle. The same people
charge differet prices day but day. The simplest
things are always hardest to do. Its a trip!!!!
A few days ago I chopped all my hair to skin, and I
now wear a Tshirt sleve on my head - most Morocans
think I have gone mad so they dont bother me anymore -
there are lots of europeans here and its better to
hang with them so your SURE your not part of some
scam. Fun and challanging!!! I have some great pics
- Ill post them soon.
