Surfing with the Dolphins
Margate, New Jersey
September, 2005
It was a beautiful September Day, the 9th to be exact, when I paddled out on Quincy Avenue. I was out surfing with my good friends Chip and Alissa for about an hour when we saw a school of dolphins approaching. Normally they swim past way on the outside, but this day we were in for a rare treat.
Strangely enough, the dolphins swam right up to us, only a few feet away at times, and then began to ride the waves. They kept on swimming by looking at us and then they would catch a wave. At one point, I was taking off on a 5 footer when a dolphin breached out of the water right above my head and then continued to ride the wave with me. Really wild.
There is no doubt that these Dolphins were communicating with us. They knew we were surfers and wanted to show us that they loved the surf too, and that they were comfortable around us. It was fantastic. These are truly intelligent creatures.
The dolphins played with us for almost a half hour before they continued their migration south. It was something I had never seen before and something I pray to see again. Regardless, it was an experience I will never forget.
