Some good travel tips for the Area
Auckland/Rotorua, New Zealand
October, 2004
It has been a great week in New Zealand even though it has rained almost every day. Auckland is a really great city that is fairly inexpensive. There are numerous Hostels to choose from ranging from $18NZ for a dorm bed to $45NZ for a single. I stayed at Queen Street Backpackers which I highly recommend. There's lots of nightlife too. I liked to go to bar on High Street that was connected to a Backpackers place but I don't remember to name. You can't miss it, cheap happy hour beers and pool tables. Most of my days were spent mountain biking. You can rent bikes cheap at Cycle World on Customs Street. The half day rate is only $12 NZ which gives you the bike from 1:00PM to 7:00PM which is plenty enough time for anyone. In Auckland you can ride for over 20K right along the water or go for the 50K city circle tour. A must is take the ferry to Waiheke Island for a wonderful day of exploring all of the beautiful coves and beaches. Bikes are free on the ferry. I also went down south to Rotorua which has the best mountain bike park anywhere in the world. This is really not to be missed if you are into bikes. In Rotorua, stay at Hot Rocks, cheap and fun.
Things are incredibly inexpensive in NZ. It was raining hard in Rotorua so I decided to buy some clothes and cheap shoes that I could get really muddy. I found a place called "The Warehouse" where I got a new pair of deck shoes for $4NZ and a set of 3 pairs of socks for $4NZ. Then I went to the Salvation Army and got a pair of Sweat Pants for .50NZ and a cool pair of corduroy long pants for $2NZ (I didn't bring and long pants with me and had been freezing at night). Really cheap and really good.
Tonight I leave for Roratonga and that should be great because I have caught a bit of a cold and can really use being in some warm weather for a couple weeks. Warm water, beach and sand!! I'll let you know how it goes when I get back!!!
