Another Fabulous Bloomsday at Shakespeare and Company
Paris, France
June, 2004

Every June 16th, Shakespeare and Company in Paris celebrates "Bloomsday", which is the day that the famous James Joyce's novel iUlyssesi takes place. Sylvia Beach, the original owner of Shakespeare and Company and first publisher of the novel, coined the term "Bloomsday" in the early twenties. This is the most important day of the year for the current owner of Shakespeare and Company, George Whitman. We always have a celebration in front of the bookstore and George buys champagne and snacks for the audience. We have great entertainment that begins with George singing the official Shakespeare and Company song that he wrote and composed. To be extra wild, this year he wore a Chinese neck wraparound that he purchased in the 20's when he and his family were visiting China. He looked great and put on a good show (see photo in Pictures section). Then we had some great speakers including Greg Estes, an expert on Ulysses from Berkeley, California. He discussed the love lives of the characters in James Joyce's novels. After, the professional actress and dancer, Maria D'Arcy, performed 'Molly Bloom' which is the last part of the novel. She is very "over the top" and does lots of skirt hiking and flashing throughout the performance. This is an event not to be missed!!! After the show, Sylvia Beach Whitman, Georgeis Daughter, held a screening of the new film "Bloom" that was introduced but the Director and Producer of the film, Sean Walsh. This was the first screening on the Continent and it was very exciting. The film was great and it toped of a truly fantastic Bloomsday in Paris. Be sure not to miss the fun next year!!
