Hong Kong
Hong Kong
October, 2000

Because I used air miles to pay for my airline ticket I had to fly through Hong Kong on my way to Auckland. I flew Cathay Pacific which is a great airline, really good service. I arrived in Hong Kong at 6:30 AM and my flight to Aucklanddidn't leave until 8:30 PM so I had time to take a city tour. I took the airport train to the city center, then took a bus to some really cool Buddhist temples and then I took a boat ride on the harbor. HK is a strange city, really beautiful structures (buildings, temples, etc) right next to really dilapidated looking high rise apartments. The residents dry their clothes on long sticks they hang out their windows like flag poles and that makes it look worse. Really rich and really poor, side by side. It is the largest city I have ever been to in terms of the number of skyscrapers and buildings - GIANT. I had a great day. I got back to the airport around 6:00 and proceeded to the Cathay Pacific VIP lounge. Lots of free food and booze!! Usually I don't drink on or before long international flights, but I had just flown all the way from LA so I broke down. I started with mimosas and ended with a Jack and Coke for my walk to the gate. Luckily I got upgraded to business class, so I had another Jack before takeoff. Then I passed out for 9 hours - woke only two hours from Auckland but I felt like shit!
