Byron Bay
Byron Bay
November, 2000
I'm really getting sick of the bus!! This time I left Hervey at 6 AM and didn't arrive in Byron until 8PM that night. Not only was it a long ride, but when I got to Byron I realized it was "Schoolies" week (high school spring break) and all the hostels in town are sold out. Not only that but the town is full of drunken 17-year-old idiot aussis. So I started walking around and found a hostel where the chick felt sorry for me. She was going to set me up a mat in the TV room, but then a friend of her's from another hostel called and said he had one bed. So I ran over to that hostel and got the bed - in a room with 13 drunk schoolies. At this point I was in the "If you can't beat them, join them" mode so I took a shower and went out and partied all night. I came to Byron to Surf - it's one of the better spots in Queensland. After securing a double at another hostel in the Morning I rented a long board and spent the next few days surfing. The waves were 2-3 feet while I was there. I was really surprised that 90 percent of the guys in the water couldn't surf and no one was shredding. I guess they were all tourists! The water was unseasonably cold at about 55 degrees. Not the best, but at least I got to surf for a few days.
