Coincidence
Paris, France
April, 2002
Interesting things happen everyday living at the Tumbleweed Hotel (Shakespeare & Company, Paris). The other day I was sitting at the desk just after opening and this new guy comes up to me, "Hi, I'm Brad, I'm staying here now. Anything I can do to help?" I look at him and can't believe it, its my Big Brother from my college fraternity. We have never been in touch with, or seen each other since the days of the TKE House. And even then we were not good friends and spent little time with each other. So here he is standing in front of me asking for chores. I say "Brad, whats up man, its me, your little brother!" He looks at me astonished and yells "Bauer". Later we both admit that I couldn't remember his last name and he couldn't remember my first!! I guess everyone at the TKE House just called me Bauer. And sometimes incredible coincidences lead to great new friendships. We shared drinks and life stories and Brad's was very interesting. From working for Senator Dashell, to the peace corps, to working in a bookstore in Stockholm, and lots of interesting stuff mixed in. While in Stockholm he fell in love with a pretty Swedish girl and decided to apply for residency so he could work legally and live in Sweden. To do so he had to return to the states to apply and then stay out of Sweden until the decision was made. So he headed back to Europe to wait for the answer. The legend of The Tumbleweed Hotel brought him to our doorstep. He had planned to just stop in Paris for a few days on his way to Prague, but after meeting George and receiving a tremendous welcome, he decided to stay for a while. We had a great two weeks working together fixing up the bookstore and discussing the state of the planet over a game of pool at the Long Hop. Then, way sooner than expected, his visa was approved and he was off to his sweetheart. Now good friends, I plan to go to Stockholm next year to help him start up his own "Shakespeare and Company." Interesting things happen everyday at the Tumbleweed Hotel.
