A Month of Surfing Paradise
Lanzaronte, Canary Islands
January, 2002

Famara is a little town in North West Lanzaronte. Nicky and I secured a cheap but nice apartment and stayed there for one month. For the 30 days we were there, there was only 4 days where you couldn't surf (because of sand storms from the Sahara). Head high perfect breaking beach break everyday. Also great reefs in the area. Beautiful clear blue water - not much more you could ask for. On our first night in Famara we met the main characters of the town so the whole time we were there we were treated to many non-tourist activities. Lanzaronte is an interesting place. First off, the Canary's are part of Spain, so this means the booze is cheap even at the bars. Lanzaronte is very inexpensive compared with the rest of Europe. And best off, you really are out of this world. In Famara, you can't get a newspaper, there's no TV and no internet. No one has any idea what's going on outside of town (except the many German Tourists). And the landscape!?! The bottom of the Island is lush with white sand beaches. The middle is splattered with hundreds of Volcano Cones and giant fields of Lava. The top has spectacular cliffs that cut jaggedly down to clear blue Canary's Atlantic. Too many spectacular views to count. And they REALLY party!!!!! We went to alot of local crazy bars. The best is called the Cave. There isn't even a sign out front. The main Chamber has a bar and live bands playing and there a few other caves that people go to smoke joints, etc. Really Surreal - weird fact - Omar Sharif won the place in a card game one was owner for 10 years, but he never went there.

Lanzaronte Rules!!
